Course Description
In this course, sophomore level students learn to execute intermediate and advanced flat patternmaking garment construction techniques, including how to carry out garment fittings according to fashion industry standards of professional execution.
As part of the learning objectives in this course, students work on mastering the development of various designs for tailored jackets, dresses, and pants. Students also learn to utilize a variety of sleeve and collar variations and apply them toward their creative design concepts.
Course projects include the construction of muslin samples and final sewn samples in
appropriate fashion fabric.

Course Objectives
Students in this course will:
1. Gain a thorough understanding of the industrial apparel design process from creation to
production using flat pattern and garment construction techniques.
2. Students will execute weekly pattern exercises, which will allow them to demonstrate their
mastery of skills gained in each learning module.
3. Develop original designs conceptually from both primary and secondary research sources.
4. Students will execute garment designs based on specified project parameters that challenge
them to incorporate and interpret their research perspectives utilizing the mediums of flat pattern
design and garment construction techniques.

Jacket Project
Jacket Project Requirements:1.) Closure- original jacket design must include an extension for either a button or snap closure. 2.) Sleeve- your jacket must include a taolored sleeve, based on our tailored sleeve block (can be short or long). Sleeves must be finished using either a cuff, a hem, or facing. 3.) Length- can be short, mid-length, long, or maxi-length. All hemlines must be finished. 4.) Fit- can be very fitted, semi-fitted, flared, or boxy. 5.) Necklines must include a collar based on the techniques demonstrated in class.

Dress Project
Dress Project Parameters:1.) Closure- your dress must include an invisible zipper closure.2.) Sleeve- your dress must include some sort of sleeve, based on our sleeve block (can be short or long). Sleeves must be finished using either a cuff, a hem, or facing. Sleeve fabric must be either sheer or silky, and incorporate the appropriate stitch techniques learned in Advanced Sewing.3.) Length- can be short, mid-length, long, or maxi-length. All hemlines must be finished.4.) Fit- can be shaped, fitted, loose, flared, or boxy. 5.) Necklines must include a facing.
